Metal stamping is a low-cost manufacturing method that is used to produce a large volume of identical metal parts from flat metal. Stamping metal tooling is used for short and long-run manufacturing. It creates various parts that are integral components of large machinery. Therefore, it has applications in various industries including manufacturing, military, automotive, and public transportation. It is a multifaceted procedure which comprised of various metal forming techniques including bending, embossing, blanking, coining, flanging, punching. The choice of technique depends on the thickness of metal and the specification of the desired part.
Punching
Punching is a process of cutting the flat metal into specific shapes such as square, circle, or any other shape. In this process, the scrap piece is discarded making a hole in the flat material.
Blanking
A stamping metal process which refers to cutting the metal into particular forms. The only difference between punching and blanking is that in the blanking, the scrap metal is not discarded but saved for future use. This piece of metal is called blank that is used later on for the specific operations. While in the punching technique, the scrap obtained is discarded.
Embossing
It is a method of producing either raised or sunken design in metal by pressing the flat material against the die of the specific shape. This technique produces a combination of the embossed and debossed pattern. The embossed pattern is higher than the background while the debossed pattern is recessed into the surface.
Coining
Coining is a stamping process in which the metal is placed between a punch and a die. The punch tips penetrate into the metal which results in the creation of coin with the flattened edge and no burr. This action also provides extra strength to the metal part as the internal stresses of the metal part are released resulting in increased tensile strength.
Bending
Bending refers to a stamping metal process where the metal is cut into specific forms like T, U, or V shape. In the bending process, the manufacturer makes sure that there is enough material to apply the bending. The bending is done around a single axis.
Flanging
Flanging refers to a stamping metal tooling in which the flat metal is bent by 90 degrees by using dies and punches.
Types of stamping metal tooling
There are three types of stamping the selection of which depends on the property of the metal to be stamped.
Precision metal stamping parts
Precious metals stamping if a quick process as in this process the movement of material is limited. These metals produce raised images of 3-D parts.
Hot metal stamping
Hot metal stamping refers to the process of creating metal pieces with extreme heat. The resulting products are lightweight and strong.
Progressive metal stamping
It is a stamping process which includes movement of material through various stations. At each station, different actions are performed on the material resulting in the finished metal pieces at the final station.
